Aruba Reef Care Project 1998 to take place in July The Aruba Perrier Reef Care Project, now in its fifth year, will take place July 43 and 5, 1998. The project is an effort by both residents and volunteer visitors to clean up Aruba's beach and dive-sites. The importance of the marine environment and helping Aruba promote its marine management goals encouraged Mr. Castro Perez, ATA's Ecotourism Project Manager and marine biologist Byron Boekhoudt of the Department of Agriculture, Husbandry and Fishery to begin this project. With Licores Aruba as main sponsor, their efforts have been successful. Last year over 600 individuals committed themselves to the cause, successfully collecting a total of 4,400 lbs of litter. This amount is nothing compared to the two tons of garbage divers, snorkelers and topsiders collected during the first year of the clean-up effort. The drastic decrease in the amount of trash can be attributed to the success of the project and the newfound commitment to a beautiful and clean Aruba, both below and above the waterline. For additional information, please contact Mr. Castro Perez at (297) 823777 ext. 254 or Mr. Byron Boekhoudt at (297) 858102 or (297) 856473.
Aruba catches travel magazines' attention once again "Aruba not only offers a great variety under water, it has a complete infrastructure that caters to all tastes". This is how Aruba is described by BUENOS VIAJES, a travel-guide magazine from Argentina. The article was part of a two-page color spread that also mentions Aruba in the Top Ten world dive destinations. The editors of ISLANDS MAGAZINE wrote a one-page color article on "Insider Aruba". The article focused on their very personal list of favorite things to do on Aruba, which included: swimming, windsurfing, island-touring, Charlie's Bar, dining, gambling and bird-watching and diving.
ECLAC to hold its 27th session here in Aruba Between Monday May 11 and Saturday May 16, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean will be discussing fiscal management, public finances and their role in promoting social equity and democratic institutions. ECLAC's sessions take place every two years and are the most important meetings on the Commission's calendar. They give the opportunity o member governments to debate ECLAC's main proposals, examine the Commission's activities during the previous two years and plan ahead for the forthcoming two years. The 1998 session is especially important since it coincides with a special ceremony to celebrate ECLAC's 50th anniversary. The concept proposed by the Commission for their 27th session is 'the fiscal covenant'. According to ECLAC, this concept describes the socio-political agreement that legitimizes the State's role and establishes the areas and scope of government responsibility in the economic and social spheres. During the meeting, ECLAC will present the concept in documented form entitled "The Fiscal Covenant: Strengths, Weaknesses, Challenges". The meetings schedule will be as follows: May 11 and 12: Discussion of ECLAC's
activities and work program reports
