As 1998 is the Year of the Ocean, preparations for a bigger and better Aruba Perrier Reef Care Clean Up are currently underway. The clean-up effort, part of the Aruba Perrier Reef Care Project 1998, is to take place this year July 4 and 5. Expectations are more than 400 volunteers will get involved in the effort, helping to clean up the island's most popular dive and beach sites along Aruba's leeward side. Organizers, Castro Perez, from the Aruba Tourism Authority, who founded the event, and Byron Boekhoudt, from the Department of Agriculture, Husbandry and Fisheries, are currently working to put the finishing touches on what they hope will be another successful clean-up event and awareness campaign. Both visitors and local residents are invited to volunteer for the event. Local dive operators will guide certified divers to the dive sites and crews will be formed to hit the beaches. All volunteers will receive a T-shirt, a box lunch and be eligible for various raffle prizes. The clean up, July 4,5, is the main event in a project that works to bring attention to the marine environment and the importance of its protection. All those who wish to be a part of this worthwhile event are encouraged to sign up with their favorite dive operator or contact Castro Perez at ATA, Tel:823777, or Byron Boekhoudt, at Santa Rosa, Tel: 856473

ASERCA bid likely to boost Air Aruba The Air Aruba Re-privatization Task Force recently announced the successful completion of the tender process for the re-privatization of Air Aruba. After careful consideration of the options open to Air Aruba, the Task force unanimously decided to recommend the ASERCA bid to the Government and Parliament of Aruba. In essence, this bid covers all the many concerns that have been raised through-out the course of the re-privatization process by the various interested parties such as current liabilities of Air Aruba, the required fresh capital infusions, the percentage of shares to be sold to the new share-holder, provisions to protect the interest of the minority share-holders, the national character of the company and the airlift needs of Aruba, the necessary assurances from the Government of Aruba that Air Aruba will continue to operate as the preferred Aruban Flag carrier and above all the interest of the employees of Air Aruba. Before proceeding with the ASERCA offer the Task force will need the approval of the Shareholders of Air Aruba (in particular the Government of Aruba), as well as various competent authorities here and abroad and a number of third parties to material contracts with Air Aruba. To this end, the task force has presented the ASERCA offer to the Government and Parliament of Aruba for Approval. Anticipating the above-mentioned approvals the final drafting of the Letter of Intent is currently under way. Plans at this time call for official signing of the Letter of Intent after which parties will proceed with all the final requisites for a final closing latest 45 days later.
