Aruba news snippets

  • NEW!! Some 600 steps leading up to the top of the 168 metre high Hooiberg were recently refurbished. Though not Aruba's highest hill, it is one of Aruba's most recognizable landmarks, giving an excellent view of the island and on a clear day, of the Venezuelan coast. The steps were repaired and upgraded by BNB Construction N.V.
  • NEW!! Miss Tourism Aruba Anushka Lew Jen Tai was recently welcomed to ATA's offices by Director Jan van Nes. Anoushka will be representing our island in Medellin, Columbia in the near future and in Tokyo, Japan next year.
  • US Consul General in Aruba - The Consul General of the United States from Curacao was in Aruba on June 29 and 30, 1998 and received american citizens at the Office of Foreign Affairs.
  • Sidney Ponson, the twenty-one year old Aruban pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles was recently hailed as "the primary reason the Yankees are in their first mini-slump In more than two months" by the New York Times. Ponson held the Yankees to two hits over six and two-thirds innings, as the Orioles won, 2-0. According to the NY Times, "One of only a handful of players from Aruba, Ponson is the organization's best prospect." Not only making us proud to have him as a very promising Major League player, Ponson has introduced Aruba to a very wide audience.
  • Aruban Cuisine made news once again - this time in the words of Carlos Quiros, an Argentine writer who dedicated a four page article in the cooking section of EL CLARIN to ATEX' 98. Quiros states that "Unlike most countries in the world who have a national anthem filled with arrogant phrases, Aruba's anthem states 'The best quality of its people, is its great cordiality.' and that's not a lie." In an attempt to make his point he says that "Adding 'their great cuisine' to the anthem phrase, would be fitting."

Aruba Perrier Reef Care Project 1998

As 1998 is the Year of the Ocean, preparations for a bigger and better Aruba Perrier Reef Care Clean Up are currently underway. The clean-up effort, part of the Aruba Perrier Reef Care Project 1998, is to take place this year July 4 and 5. Expectations are more than 400 volunteers will get involved in the effort, helping to clean up the island's most popular dive and beach sites along Aruba's leeward side.

Organizers, Castro Perez, from the Aruba Tourism Authority, who founded the event, and Byron Boekhoudt, from the Department of Agriculture, Husbandry and Fisheries, are currently working to put the finishing touches on what they hope will be another successful clean-up event and awareness campaign.

Both visitors and local residents are invited to volunteer for the event. Local dive operators will guide certified divers to the dive sites and crews will be formed to hit the beaches. All volunteers will receive a T-shirt, a box lunch and be eligible for various raffle prizes. The clean up, July 4,5, is the main event in a project that works to bring attention to the marine environment and the importance of its protection.

All those who wish to be a part of this worthwhile event are encouraged to sign up with their favorite dive operator or contact Castro Perez at ATA, Tel:823777, or Byron Boekhoudt, at Santa Rosa, Tel: 856473

Women’s Club of Aruba honored

The General Federation of Women's Clubs established since 1890 in Washington DC has 6200 affiliated members worldwide. Each club is distinctively different in membership, interests, resources, challenges and opportunities but together they share a 108-year history of commitment to improving the communities in which they are located.

Since the 1950's, the Community Improvement Program has been the foundation on which the General Federation of Women's Clubs have built not only a heritage of accomplishment, but also a vision for the future. Through the years, the Community Improvement Program has developed and involved, helping clubs meet the varying and changing needs of their communities.

During a recent dinner event, President of the Women's club of Aruba Mrs. Lilian Martis, was honored with international recognition at the Fairmount Hotel in New Orleans. This recognition was presented to her by an executive of Shell Oil, Mrs. Norma Williams in the presence of over 2000 ladies from across the world. The "Free PAP test campaign" for all women in Aruba was the project presented to receive this award. This project also excelled in the Aruban community last November and was the project of the year of the club for club year 1997-1998. It was quite remarkable that Aruba was the only international club to receive an award. Mrs. Lilian Martis took the opportunity to once more extend her gratitude to everyone who helped in realizing this project, especially Mrs. Adelaida Ponson chairperson of the Health committee and all her committee members who made the project possible.

ASERCA bid likely to boost Air Aruba

The Air Aruba Re-privatization Task Force recently announced the successful completion of the tender process for the re-privatization of Air Aruba. After careful consideration of the options open to Air Aruba, the Task force unanimously decided to recommend the ASERCA bid to the Government and Parliament of Aruba. In essence, this bid covers all the many concerns that have been raised through-out the course of the re-privatization process by the various interested parties such as current liabilities of Air Aruba, the required fresh capital infusions, the percentage of shares to be sold to the new share-holder, provisions to protect the interest of the minority share-holders, the national character of the company and the airlift needs of Aruba, the necessary assurances from the Government of Aruba that Air Aruba will continue to operate as the preferred Aruban Flag carrier and above all the interest of the employees of Air Aruba.

Before proceeding with the ASERCA offer the Task force will need the approval of the Shareholders of Air Aruba (in particular the Government of Aruba), as well as various competent authorities here and abroad and a number of third parties to material contracts with Air Aruba.

To this end, the task force has presented the ASERCA offer to the Government and Parliament of Aruba for Approval. Anticipating the above-mentioned approvals the final drafting of the Letter of Intent is currently under way. Plans at this time call for official signing of the Letter of Intent after which parties will proceed with all the final requisites for a final closing latest 45 days later.
