Briefs for May 1-31, 1999
Caribbean cuisine coming up at 1999 Aruba Culinary Competition This year's competition, sponsored by the Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association (AHATA), will again take place at the Seaport Conference Center, on May 11 - 12, 1999. The Aruba Bartenders Competition and second annual Food & Beverage Expo will take place at the same time. April 29th was the deadline for chefs to register and submit their recipes at the AHATA office. It is hoped that all the chefs who attended Chef Ray Farmer's preparatory seminar on April 10th, as well as those who didn't, will enter. As the Aruba National Culinary Team will consist of the five winning chefs and one winning bartender, Aruban entrants are especially encouraged to take part. This winning team will take part at the international competition of the Caribbean Hotel Association, to be held in July in Miami, Florida. This year's modified competition will consist of a combined Hors d'Oeuvres & Mystery Market Entrée Competition, as well as a separate Pastry Competition. Two American Culinary Federation judges, Ray Farmer and Ed Brown, will preside, assisted by Chef Ronald van Hasenbroek, Food & Beverage Manager of Aruba Restaurants.
Aruban entry for the Green Area Hotel Award in united EBA-CAST Amsterdam Manor Beach Resort, La Cabana Resort and Casino, Costa Linda Beach Resort and Bucuti Beach Resort have recently formed the Eagle Beach Area Coalition for Aruba's Sustainable Tourism (EBA-CAST). The aim of the coalition is to preserve and maintain the Eagle Beach area in its pristine and natural state for future generations of visitors and the local population. Eagle Beach encompasses approximately two miles of beachfront area. Their plan is to coordinate beach clean-up projects on both the roadside and beach, but also to coordinate the training and awareness sessions. Expert speakers will develop the knowledge of members. A video library for use in schools, businesses and the community will also be developed. EBA-CAST already participates in a number of 'green' projects such as the Sponsor-A- Mile program, a recycling program for glass, aluminum and carton, beach clean-ups and a school project. Future plans include visits to schools, field trips with students, close cooperation with the City Inspector and a draft agreement with the Department of the Environment with respect to voluntary control and environmental safeguards. The ultimate goal of EBA-CAST is to have all the Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association (AHATA) members join and actively participate in the coalition's projects.
Kite flying contest of Kiwanis Club of Aruba, a huge success For many years the Kiwanis Club of Aruba has organized a kite flying contest as part of Queen's birthday celebration, and 1999 was no exception. "With the success we once again had with our kite flying contest last Sunday, we feel that once again we have succeeded in our work for the community of Aruba, and especially for the children, as children are priority number one for our organization," a Kiwanis Club spokesperson said. There were 236 participants in 3 different categories - 0-8 years: 66 participants; 9-16 years: 125 participants; and category 17 years and up: 45 participants. Contestants were judged on varied criteria: design, size, creativity and also on how well the kite flies. There was certainly no lack of creativity as kites in all sizes, and designs were on display, the largest one was 2 by 2 meters! The Kiwanis Club of Aruba members also organized a B.B.Q., and cold drinks were available at reasonable prices.
Party planning preview for the Millenium New Year in Aruba is to be ushered in with numerous activities planned by the islands hotels. Word has it that Sonesta will bring in the New Year with a bang, organizing a special fireworks show. The Wyndham will feature a concert by Jose Feliciano. The Radisson is looking forward to the magic of the New Year with a performance by magician/illusionist Nick Knight...perhaps it would be an idea to make use of his services before the millennium to ensure that the Radisson refurbishment is completed in time!
Having closed Cheers, Anthony Muyale is now devoting his energy to Havana Beach Club - the hottest new club on Arubas nightclub scene. With its great location (right on the coast in what was formerly known as Surfside), diverse music mix, large dance floor and imaginative décor, the club draws large crowds especially on weekends and Wednesdays (Ladies Night). Two new nightclubs are scheduled to open soon. Already soft-opened is The Palladium (replacing Hit & Run). The club welcomes club goers from the 20-something set who enjoy dancing to popular American tunes. Its official grand opening, featuring an as yet unannounced band from the U.S. is scheduled for mid-May. The ex-Cobalt Club is also scheduled to reopen under a new name after undergoing a complete metamorphosis at the hands of its new owners.

"Staatsloterijshow" - all bets on Aruba! Fun games and excitement are scheduled for May, when the "Staatsloterijshow" (Dutch State Lottery Show), a John de Mol production, will record its gameshow in Aruba. Two teams of Aruban volunteers headed by a Dutch celebrity, will organize fund-raisers for a local charity in the form of a variety of different physical challenges and intellect-testing matches. The "Staatsloterij" in Aruba will be recorded between May 5th-15th, highlighting the best sides of the island, with shoots planned on the beach, in and around the pool (at La Cabana and at Tierra del Sol), on and under the sea, and also from the air (with a helicopter leaving from Amsterdam Manor).
