Aruba Hi-Winds is back again from June 8-14, 1999

The Aruba Hi-Winds, Aruba's annual event, is here once again.
From June 8 - 14 Aruba's "Fisherman Huts" white beaches with crystal clear water, will be the venue for the 13th edition of the best-known Caribbean windsurfing event. This year's event promises to be better than ever.

Over the years, since 1987, the Aruba Hi-Winds is, with over 150 competitors from the Caribbean, South - and North-America and Europe still the biggest. International windsurfing tournament in the Caribbean.

The Aruba Hi-Winds persisted because of the determination of the local windsurf community with his volunteers and international and local sponsors like: Neil Pryde, the Aruba Tourism Authority (ATA), American Airlines, Havana Beach Club, The Pelican Nest, Arimco, Radio Holland, M.S.K. Savaneta, Aruba Beach Police, Corona, Salt & Pepper, Hooters and the local windsurf centers: Vela, Sailboard Vacations, The Boardwalk and Aruba Boardsailing Productions.

This is the first year that the Aruba Hi-Winds is organizing this event without the coordination of ATA. After years of hard and good work, Chido Henriquez, event coordinator with ATA, decided that the Aruba Hi-Winds was mature enough to stand on its own feet.

"We have something to prove. That's why we started early to organize this event," Jean Pierre van der Eerenbeemt, owner of Aruba Boardsailing Productions and general director of the Aruba Hi-Winds, says, 'and it's bearing its fruits. Three weeks before the event and everything is ready and planned. I think it's a record.

What's left is building up the site and wait for the competitors to fly in."This year we have a full program: for competitors as well for local people and other spectators. Every day happy hour with "Hooter-girls" in our Corona Beach Bar. Wednesday till Friday at night parties with live Music (the JEMM, OREO) at the Hi-Winds Festival at 'Salt and Pepper', Saturday Happy Hour and BBQ at Havana Beach Club, Sunday Corona beach party at the Fisherman Huts and Monday closing ceremony at Havana Club."

"For the competitors we have, besides racing in pounding winds on Sunday the 'King of the Huts’ freestyle competition, which is going to be very spectacular for the audience.

And Saturday the Copa Havana Club long distance race from the Fisherman Huts to the Havana Beach. At the Havana Beach we're going to have in the afternoon speedraces and races for local juniors who can't race the whole tournament."

"We have a lot of windsurf talents in Aruba. Here we have all the ingredients to develop winning skills; a lot of wind and clear, warm water. Aruba is one of the few places on Earth where you can windsurf the whole year around. In other places, like Europe or North-America you have in summer nice temperatures but no wind or in winter or autumn a lot of wind but very cold."

Because of some alternatives on Aruba to teach local children how to windsurf, we see an explosion of talent 'ripping', that means riding the waves, the water of Aruba.

"You can see in the local races of the WRCA (Wind Racers Club Aruba), every other Saturday at Fisherman Huts more juniors than seniors, and they're kicking 'some seniors' behinds too. We expect this year a lot of Ryan Lampe, ARU-5. After Jeroen Westrate's retirement as a professional windsurfer this is the hope for Aruba, he is a potential winner."

"With the juniors we have several candidates: Cedric Croes, Wim Eelens, Marc Cheung. All kids with the determination to become winners.

But not only the Trade Winds, crystal clear waters and hundreds of competitors make this event year after year successful. Without the help of the volunteers, The Royal Dutch Marines and the Aruban Beach Police it wouldn't be possible to organize such a big tournament. Without any personal profits, or maybe the free T-shirt, these people are contributing to show the world the good side of Aruba.

Postal Services of Aruba emits "Creole Dogs 1999" stamps

Nature has given dogs the innate desire to protect their owners, their property and to be a loyal and loving companion to family members. Those qualities are the absolute reason for the animal's existence, It is therefore essential that each canine be cared for properly and treated with kindness and appreciation.

In Aruba, the most popular dogs are familiarly known as "cacho crioyo". These animals are a mixture of pure breeds and mixed breeds brought to the island from abroad. They have, over the years, developed highly recognizable characteristics, though their origin is not easily detectable. Their intelligence is unquestioned; their style their own; they are as individual and as blended as people themselves.

As seen in the stamps photographed and designed by Mr. Angel Osorio, "cacho crioyo" can be found besides in family homes also in the wild (Afl.1,65), on the beach (Afl.0.80), in the countryside (Afl.0.60) and in the streets (Afl.0.40). The dogs pictured were taken from the Animal Shelter in Wayaca which was founded on August 8, 1987 where they are awaiting adoption.

The Shelter was established to ensure the well-being of Aruba's pet population and educate the community, of all ages, in the appropriate ways required to be a pet owner in order to prevent abuse and neglect of the dog population. Over the last several years, the island has seen a sustained increase in the numbers of homeless dogs. Although some have been born in the wild, most at one time were part of a human household.

In 1998, almost 5000 of God's creatures had to be humanely destroyed. The adjacent Veterinary Clinic provides services whereby an animal can be spayed (or neutered) in order to prohibit reproduction, cutting down the unwanted animal population. Other services are dedicated to the health of each animal in response to their unconditional love for their families.

Date of issue: May 31, 1999 Designer Angel Osorio Values: AFI. 0.40; 0.60; 0.80; 1.65 First-day cover Afl. 4.20. These stamps will be available at the Postal Offices of San Nicolas, Noord, Royal Plaza and Oranjestad, starting on May 31, 1999 through May 30, 2001 while supply lasts. Orders can be placed at the Philatelic Service Post Office Oranjestad, Aruba. Telephone (297-8-21900), Fax (297-8-27930).
