7th Aruba Perrier Reef Care Project is a success

Reaching the front page of almost every island newspaper, the 7th Aruba Perrier Reef Care Project was successful in once again bringing attention to Aruba's marine environment. Over the course of the clean-up week-end, July 1 and 2, a combined total of 700 volunteers participated, cleaning the island's most popular beach and dive sites.

Divers, school children and even the visiting public joined together to cart away bags of litter from sites such as Mangel Halto, Arashi and Manzanilla.

Congratulations go to ATA's Castro Perez for once again organizing the event, together with the assistance of local dive operators who led the different groups, resorts which provided lunch boxes and refreshments for the crew, and the main sponsor of the event, Licores Aruba.

Paintball Competition to make its mark on Palm Beach

Teams from all over the U.S. are looking forward to participate in the Paintball Competition to be held this year on Aruba, July 28 -30.

The Holiday Inn Beach Resort will be the site of the paintball competition and its activities with play taking place on Aruba's white sands of Palm Beach. Over 100 competitors, composed of teams from throughout the U.S., along with a team from Aruba, will compete, in a 3-on-3 tournament. Games will take place in an inflatable "Pursuit Park," measuring 100 ft. long by 50 ft. wide. In this completely contained arena, 12 teams will each play 11 games on Saturday, July 29, and again on Sunday, July 30 totaling over 100 games per day.

The event is being organized by Brass Eagle Paintball Products, which has organized the event for three straight years for paintball enthusiasts.

In Aruba, itself, the game is offered on a regular basis at Daimari Ranch, in Daimari, allowing paintball enthusiasts to wear their battle fatigues and enjoy the game on an Aruban playing field composed of mangroves.

Danny Boy pub brings a taste of Ireland to Aruba

Cider, Irish beer and English ale are the featured drinks of choice at Aruba's first Irish pub, recently opened near the high-rise hotel strip, a block east of the Allegro Resort.

Kieran and Bev Donnelly, natives of Ireland, who first visited the island more than a decade ago, took such a liking to Aruba's warm and cordial atmosphere, they decided to set up shop. In the tradition of a true Irish pub, social interaction is key here, aided by the sounds of Celtic rock, "Lord of the Dance" rhythms and the Donnellys' warm brogue. Adding to the atmosphere is a wall mural of the green hills of Ireland as well as prints of a 12th century Celtic story anthology and even a magic wooden shillelagh.

Danny Boy is open 3 p.m. - 1 a.m., Monday through Thursday, and until 3 a.m. on the weekends.

Sonesta announces NEW Spa, NEW Name, NEW Staff

According to the Spring edition of its "News You Can Use," Sonesta will open its new full service health spa and fitness center, named Okeanos (Greek for ocean) located in the former Desires Lounge area, this August. The new facility will feature four treatment rooms for complete massages and other services including facial and hydrotherapy treatments.

The Spa is just one example of the recent positive change at the resort. Along with the full-scale, renovations at the resort begun last year, totaling $25 million in new additions and upgrades soon to be complete, resort management has decided to rename the property as the Aruba Sonesta Beach Resort at Seaport Village, differentiating the two buildings as the Marina Tower (the current Sonesta Resort) and the Beach Tower (the current Sonesta Suites.)

The Sonesta attributes the decision to a way to better sell the entire village, the facilities of which include 556 rooms and suites, 15 restaurants, 6 bars and lounges, 2 casinos, a health spa, 2 fitness centers, a 40,000 conference center, over 130 shops and its private island.

In helping to promote the resort and all its amenities, the Sonesta recently named Antoinette van den Berg as group sales manager for Latin America, Shirley Geerman as group sales manager for the U.S. and Marusca Harms as Sales Coordinator. ATA wishes the best of success to all in their new positions!
